Chongjin is located in the northeast of the country. It is an important military and industrial center and the country’s third largest city which is home to about 627,000 people. Chongjin is the DPRK’s second-largest industrial city with numerous factories. a ship yard, textile mills, food stuff factories and the massive six million ton capacity Kim Chaek Number 1 Iron and Steel Complex. Chongjin has been nicknamed “The City of Iron”.
Chongjin was hard hit during the North Korean famine of the 1990’s. It is estimated that 20% of the population perished during the famine and economic collapse. This period of time is referred to as the Arduous March by the DPRK.
